To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight we’re inviting friends, supporters and local businesses to share their ideas on how to #ComeOnIn to Fairtrade. Today we welcome Allegro Optical Opticians to the guest blog. We’re delighted that Allegro embrace Fairtrade where they can and have joined fairandfunky as a Conference Partner; enabling us to share Fairtrade goody bags with all delegates.
“As Opticians we focus on the bigger picture and were delighted when fairandfunky invited us to become a Conference Partner. At Allegro Optical Opticians we’re focused on providing the very best in ethical eye care and wellbeing. The business was founded in September 2016 and we opened our Meltham practice in March 2017. We were determined to provide not only the very best service and products we could, we wanted to do so without detriment to others. Thankfully we’ve been able to do just that.
As a company we acknowledge our responsibility to the local community in which we work, to the local environment and to the global village as a whole. For us fair prices for workers, better labour standards and safe working conditions are essential. People often forget that Fair Trade is equally invested in protecting the environment and that’s something very close to our hearts. We encourage our team to recognise these responsibilities and to behave in a responsible manner towards society and our environment.
For us just serving Fairtrade products such as tea and coffee to our clients isn’t enough. Unfortunately there is no such thing as Fairtrade spectacle lenses, or frames for that matter. If there was, we would sell them. We do try to buy our frames and lenses as locally and ethically as possible. Many of the frames we sell are manufactured in the UK, some from sustainable materials such as wood and hemp. The majority of our lenses are made right here in West Yorkshire. By doing this we are reducing air miles and in turn our carbon footprint. It also means we are supporting the British economy during what can be described as a particularly difficult and uncertain time for the UK.
So when you visit Allegro Optical Opticians you can not only be sure that you will receive first class eye care, rest assured that it won’t cost you the Earth. At Allegro Optical Opticians we don’t do cheap spectacle frames bought in from China, often made in factories by low paid workers. We don’t sell lenses produced in Eastern Europe or the Far East, by staff paid a fraction of those in the UK. Often with poorer living standards as a result. What you do get is quality, well made spectacles, many produced in the UK, from sustainable materials and all made by qualified craftsmen who are paid a fair wage.
Allegro Optical Opticians provide a full range of services for private and NHS clients including eye examinations for adults and children, contact lens consultations and check-ups. As an NHS registered practice we welcome all ages, including children, who if required receive 2 pairs of spectacles free of charge. We also provide a full audiology service including hearing tests, and hearing aids which are manufactured in Scotland.
When you visit Allegro Optical Opticians you can be sure that you will receive professional care, and you can rest assured that it won’t cost it won’t cost you the Earth.
