‘Holme Valley Green Week’ is back for the third consecutive year. The week, celebrating all things “Green runs from 30th September through to 6th October, and will bring the local community together to explore the importance of sustainable practices and the impact we all have on the environment.
Inspired by a national initiative spearheaded by The Climate Coalition, fairandfunky’s version of Great Big Green Week seeks to engage local residents, businesses, and organisations in meaningful conversations and actions to combat climate change. Holme Valley Green Week events are free to attend, and open to all – it is our hope that individuals, organisations and businesses will get involved; whether by attending events or creating their own eco-friendly initiatives. The week of events is more than just a series of activities; it’s a call to action for the entire community to think globally and act locally to take action for the climate.
Kickstarting the week on Monday 30th September at 6pm, is ‘Green Drinks’: a networking event hosted at Café Root in New Mill, offering a relaxed environment for individuals passionate about the environment to share ideas and connect over a cup of tea (or maybe something stronger!). The event will include a guest speaker from Suma Wholefoods, discussing sustainable business practices.
Holme Valley Climate Action Partnership are also getting involved with the week of events, and will be hosting their annual Home Energy Event, giving the local community access to information and solutions around making homes more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. You can join them at Holmfirth Tech on Wednesday 2nd October from 5pm.
On Thursday 3rd October we’re running a workshop at Holmfirth Library to create community bunting for the new ‘Walk Wheel Ride’ Active Travel Hub in Holmfirth. We’re creating artworks inspired by the wonders we see as we walk around the valley, to encourage more to use alternatives to the car.
The Great Big Green Get-Together, on Friday 4th October will be the grand celebration event, with a full day of activities, including a Fairtrade café, creative workshops, a book swap, and an opportunity to connect with local ethical organisations, fostering a culture of reuse and thoughtful consumption. The event will also host The Great Big Green Children’s Art Exhibition on the theme of “Green”, with the winning entry and runners up on display.
We’re also thrilled that local dental surgery ‘Smiles in Tandem’ are also getting involved with Holme Valley Green Week. Showing that anyone can take climate action and take little steps to change the world. They have special offers on their sustainable products range and for new customers. It’s never too late for you or your business to get involved. Please email helen@fairandfunky.com if you have a ‘Green’ themed special offer you’d like to share.
Another brilliant community initiative is also happening during Holme Valley Green Week! The Repair Café at Holmfirth Tech will be open on Saturday 5th October from 10am till 1pm. Their brilliant team of recyclers will be on hand to repair your broken things, reducing waste going to landfill and encouraging reuse. We can 100% vouch for their expertise after they fixed our smoothie bike for us earlier in the year.
We’re dedicated to empowering, educating and inspiring people to take little steps to change the world, and this is exactly what Holme Valley Green Week is all about, we hope you will join us.
