Agents of Change with The Ministry of Eco Education

On Thursday November 14th The Ministry of Eco Education hosted ‘Eco Ed Yorkshire’ at The Hepworth in Wakefield. We were delighted to be invited to run two workshops for the teacher delegates at this dynamic gathering for Climate and Sustainability Education. It was thrilling to be in a room full of passionate climate action enthusiasts and to hear stories from schools, businesses, and more about the steps they are taking to bring sustainability onto the agenda of school curriculums. Many spoke about the challenges within the current primary curriculum and the need to embrace projects that develop curiosity in young people.

Our workshops do just that. We ask questions throughout our sessions to encourage young people to think critically about the environments around them. We provide meaningful activities to enrich learning through problem solving, discussion and creativity. Children collaborate with each other and build confidence, learning how to explore and reflect on their sense of place in the world. Our workshops enrich learning across the curriculum, and as young people feel empowered to make a difference their confidence builds, improving their personal development and ability to take on challenges across their school life.

Climate education is crucial for the children of our schools. Together we can raise aspirations to empower school communities to create collective action and instigate the systemic change that is needed. Working with The Ministry of Eco Education enables us to develop our own climate knowledge and instill hope. But just what is the Ministry of Eco Education? We asked our director, and Yorkshire co-ordinator of the team to tell us more:

The Ministry of Eco Education is part of the Green Britain Foundation, a collaboration of teachers working together to place sustainability at the heart of education with a green curriculum.  The MEE weaves together the best free resources and opportunities from hundreds of organisations to help teachers to embed sustainability across every subject for every pupil. MEE has developed the resources and plans schools need saving teachers and educators time and energy.  The MEE has four Regional Coordinators who work across the country to share the MEE journey providing a series of lessons, resources and a five-step, whole-school journey aligned to the National Curriculum.  Meryl in the North East, Nirvana in the South West, Paul in the South East, and myself in West Yorkshire and the Midlands. MEE can offer online and in-person training, live lessons, Eco Days with workshops and speakers, we can offer 1:1 support, training and CPD.  We have a website packed with resources, big questions and lesson plans from EYFS to KS3.   To find out more head to our website Ministry of Eco Education | Home and follow us on social media.”

We really enjoyed our morning of collective action, sharing messages of hope with teachers and learning from others too. It is together that we all take little steps to change the world.
