We’ve been running SCRAPtastic after school club at Hepworth Junior and Infant School since January 2023 – that’s almost 2 years of weekly sessions to take little steps to change the world!
Each week we take junk you would normally throw in the bin and transform it in to individual works of art; from hanging mobiles to puppets; from bird feeders to recycled wreaths, all whilst chatting about the steps we are taking every day to have a positive impact on people and planet.
Since our two year anniversary in the school is coming up, we thought we would interview our longest standing member (and SCRAPtastic expert), Huw, to see what he thinks of our after school club.
What is SCRAPtastic after school club?
It’s a club that you can do crafting in. You recycle scraps and stop them being dumped into a landfill.
Why do you come to SCRAPtastic?
Because I get to see my best crafting buddy! [who is your best crafting buddy?] Sophie!
What has been your favourite craft?
The one where you can make anything that you want! Because I get to imagine what I could make.
Why is recycling important?
Because it stops rubbish getting dumped into landfill.
Has SCRAPtastic inspired you? If so, how?
Yep! I get to make stuff and it makes me feel nice. It gives me ideas.
How would you describe SCRAPtastic club to a friend?
It’s like a really good crafting club where you get to see your friends.
What are you looking forward to making in future?
A robot!
We love crafting with Hepworth Junior and Infant School students every week, just as much as Huw loves having us in his school! Taking time to be still, and craft together creates opportunities for meaningful conversations as well as creating works of art from recycled materials. We feel privileged to build relationships with young people like Huw at after school club and can’t wait to see what they create in 2025 (particularly the robot!)
