Inspired by The Climate Coalition’s Great Big Green Week* fairandfunky are hosting the first ever Holme Valley Green Week from 25th-29th September 2023.
Climate is the current buzz word. Whether that’s climate change, climate crisis, climate emergency or climate denial. There is no escaping the talk about the climate, the environment, our world. It’s in the news, it’s all around us, it always has been.
For fairandfunky it’s climate awareness that we want to talk about and act upon. Everything we do; every time we shop, eat, travel, go out, stay in, get dressed……. ANYTHING! It all has an impact on our planet, our environment, our climate. Everything we use everyday is made somewhere, by someone and the STUFF we use creates an environmental footprint. Society has created a world in which we can live our day to day without a second thought. It has become very easy for us to buy, use, accumulate, throw away, STUFF. To be consumers without thinking about the provenance of everyday products nor the impact of them on the people and planet. It is time to be active consumers, to be thoughtful citizens. We have too much stuff and the need to live sustainably is paramount.
The idea behind Holme Valley Green Week is to encourage us all to start thinking about the actions we take every day. To start changing behaviours so that we can act sustainably with our consumer choices. We want to be able to share ideas, get people thinking, talking, and acting upon those ideas. We want to raise awareness of the amazing green initiatives on our doorstep and give people opportunity to access them, ask questions and get involved.
We launch Holme Valley Green Week with a Green Drinks networking event at Café Root in New Mill on Monday 25th September from 6-8pm. A chance for people to get together and share ideas on all things green and sustainable in the Holme Valley. You may know nothing and want to meet people who do! You may run an environmental social enterprise and want to share your activities. You may just want to meet some like-minded people in a relaxed and friendly space. This is a free event but please CLICK HERE to book your place via Eventbrite.
On Wednesday 27th September we host a Great Big Green Week Get Together Day at Holmfirth Tech from 10am – 3pm. A Fairtrade café welcomes you to a room full of creativity and inspiration to take little steps to change the world with local organisations. Come along to get ideas, share ideas, have conversations, enjoy a cup of tea! There will also be a clothes swap and a book exchange so bring your unwanted outfits and well-read books to replace with new-to-you ones.
Holme Valley Green Week closes with a meet the artist celebration event in the Gallery at Holmfirth Tech on Friday 29th September from 7pm. The ‘All Things Green and Sustainable Art Exhibition’ will be open throughout September showcasing work from talented Holme Valley artists who take their inspiration from the local environment.
However, Holme Valley Green Week is not limited to these events and activities. We invite people of the Holme Valley to create their own event to add to the calendar. Whether you’re an individual on a litter pick, a business showcasing your green credentials on social media or a shop promoting your eco-wares we’d like to hear from you so we can promote you. Please email helen@fairandfunky.com with your ideas and we’ll share them far and wide.
We hope that Holme Valley Green Week is the first of an annual event in the Holme Valley and will create conversation around climate bringing people together to take their own little steps to change the world.
*We know, the official Great Big Green Week is in June, but June is a very busy time in the fairandfunky calendar (and in the Holme Valley calendar) so we have made the bold step to create our own week of eco focussed activities in September!
