When we get a website enquiry that starts: “We are looking for some sort of workshop for the summer term for year one and two, 60 children. Their learning will be about recycling , ocean and fair trade.” we know we can help! Our range of workshops cover these topics and more – climate change, biodiversity, sustainability and more.
So last month we packed our bags with hundreds of bottle tops, card, felt scraps, glue, and giant sea creatures to run SCRAP THAT PLASTIC workshops at Anston Hillcrest Primary School in Rotherham. We had been invited to run sessions as an end of topic treat for the children who had been looking at the impact of plastic in the ocean and how individuals can make a difference. The workshop began with an interactive quiz all about the history of plastics and the problems we face from single use plastics, involving all children it consolidated their prior learning, and gave plenty of opportunity for sharing opinions and developing ideas.
The students also took part in a simple recycling activity that created further discussions as we realised how complicated recycling can be! Each council has it’s own recycling policies and different bins for our waste. Knowing what can be recycled and what needs to be thrown away can be different according to where you live. Making it all the more important to think about your rubbish and what you do with it. Can it be recycled?
Recycling should be the last thing we do with our waste. We should be re-using, re-purposing, re-thinking, re-ducing and re-pairing before we think about throwing away. In all fairandfunky SCRAPtastic workshops we don’t throw it away, we make something! And in SCRAP THAT PLASTIC each student creates a fish mobile to carry out of the classroom and start conversations about waste. AND together the class create a giant sea creature from plastic bottle tops to spark conversations within school.
“SCRAP THAT PLASTIC was so engaging for our children. We loved the session, it consolidated all of our prior learning and was a wonderful experience for the students.” Teacher feedback.
