The Great Big Green Children’s Art Competition

The Great Big Green Children’s Art Competition was open to primary school aged children to celebrate the environment as part of Holme Valley Green Week. Young people were invited to submit artworks made from junk you would normally throw away on the theme of ‘GREEN’. We love the imaginations and creativity of children so weren’t surprised by the quality, and thoughtfulness of the entries we received! After much deliberation we were able to choose a winning entry, and five runners up! And we’d like to share them with you here……

The winning entry is from Carys at Hinchliffe Mill School. “I made the ‘Busy Bees Tree’ from our recycling. From toilet tubes, and toilet paper wrap, mushroom tray, mummy’s garden magazine, kitchen roll tube, yoghurt pot and an egg box. It’s green because it has leaves of green and bees that keep things green because they spread pollen from flower to flower.”

And in no particular order the runners up are:

Oliva’s ‘Fluffy White Cat’ made using things from the bin. “I like using scrap to save things being thrown away.”

The ‘Baa Brothers’3 from George, Harry and Isaac. “Our Yorkshire sheep show some of things that are important to us and we have kept them green by creating them with old and recycled materials.”

‘Rocket’ by Florence, made from scrap paper and an old plastic bottle. “I built a rocket because I want to be an astronaut.”

Lily’s ‘The Green Apple’. “I created a space to grow seeds after easting. It uses recycled boxes, bottles and paper. It also uses home made compost and peel from banana skins for fertiliser.”

Ayda created a wolf enclosure using wood offcuts, plastic containers and recycled paper. “The wolf enclosure aims to help protect wolves and re-introduce them into the wild. The enclosure is controlled by computers so wolves are not disrupted by humans and are as wild as can be. This enclosure can be used for many endangered species and help save animals and re-wild habitats.”

Let’s hope climate researchers are reading this blog and will get in touch with these future engineers who, with this compassion and vision, are going to take huge steps to make a positive difference to the planet.

Congratulations to everyone who entered the competition. The artwork can be viewed at Holmfirth Tech during Holme Valley Green Week. We loved all the entries and know there is a generation of change makers in the Holme Valley ready to take climate action and take little steps to change the world.
