At the end of 2023 we were approached by the manager at Holmfirth Tech to ask if we’d be interested in running some of our recycled craft workshops for adults. Funnily enough, this had been something we had been discussing as we’ve witnessed how many parents love the SCRAPtastic craft sessions just as much (if not more than!) their children. So, we leapt at the opportunity and since the beginning of the year have been running recycled crafts every Wednesday as part of the Warm Spaces programme from the tech.
We like to lead by example when encouraging others to take little steps to change the world, so all our workshops use recycled materials. Demonstrating that you can rethink, reuse and repurpose things that might otherwise be thrown away, and also showing that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on crafting…..you just have to like being covered in PVA glue!
Our Warm Space Wednesday workshops are open to everyone, regardless of ability! You don’t need to be an artist, an expert crafter, or a seamstress to take part. In fact, you don’t have to take part in the craft at all, you can just come along and enjoy the gentle conversations with a tea or a coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Although so far, those who think they’re not going to craft always end up doing so!
We have made delicate paper bowls and our own handmade paper, we have created beautiful mobiles from old Christmas cards, we have designed bookmarks and this week we will be turning old t-shirts into yarn and shopping bags! Each week is a different craft*, discovering new ways to recycle your household rubbish: don’t throw it away, make something.
One of the lovely things about our Warm Space Wednesday sessions is the chatter and the sharing of the day to day. The funding from One Community enables Holmfirth Tech to provide a free lunch too and crafters stay on to chat over a stew or a jacket potato. It’s a really friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We are loving the time and space to develop our work and share our love for crafting with new people – join us!
